"Meet The Mormons" A Movie~

I am a Mormon. I belong to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. A brief history of the church can be found here. The Church was restored and organized on April 6th 1830. You can read about the restored church here.
In the beginning days of the church there was great opposition and persecution. Today we still have some persecution but more misunderstandings of what we believe and who as a people we really are. Many do not think we are Christians. The church has recently made a film entitled; "Meet The Mormons" to clarify who we are. All proceeds from this movie will be given to the Red Cross organization. If it comes in your area take some time and find out more about the Mormons. The stories are about a few Mormon families throughout the world.


Just wanted all of you who follow my blog to know that I am presently in Idaho visiting with our two sons and their families. We are having a good time attending 4 football games of our grandchildren. I will be blogging more about these family events later.
 I am trying to pop in and out to read your posts. You are all dear friends so if I miss any; it is because I am on family time. Hugs to all!

Come Listen; Feel The Spirit and Receive Answers To Your Prayers~

I really love fall. There is a unique feeling that comes into my heart and soul when the weather changes and the beautiful fall colors roll into view. It is also a very special time of year for the sweet opportunity of a weekend of messages given at our Semi-annual General Conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. 
After the two day conference that is held twice a year; I spend time reading the Conference messages over. I always find answers to prayers, guidance for my life, and uplifting thoughts to help me when dealing with the struggles of life. 
We believe in a modern day Prophet like the Prophets of old. Here is the Prophet.

Prophet and President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints;

 We also have 12 Apostles just like in the time when the Savior was here on earth.

The Twelve Apostles~

 During this coming weekend we will have the opportunity to hear from our Prophet as well as members of the quorum of 12 Apostles, as they deliver powerful messages for our time. Like Peter, James and John, who led the Church after the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, we have a modern First Presidency.

I am very excited to listen to their messages. My prayer is that no matter your faith that you might take a moment and listen to our Prophet. We believe he is a Prophet for the world. 
Topics will include: Our Heavenly Father, Our Savior, the Atonement of Jesus Christ, Eternal Life, the Holy Ghost, the Restoration of the Gospel, Service, Love, Kindness, and many other timely subjects.

The Precious Book of Mormon Another Testament of Jesus Christ~

I loved to read, and I do a lot of reading. If I were to tell you my favorite book of all; it would be The Book of Mormon. I have read, pondered and studied this book of scriptures many times throughout my life. It has answered questions about life and has given me answers to prayers. I have had the privilege of teaching from it's pages to both family and classrooms. This is a powerful book and if read, will bless your life. 

First of all, I should tell you what The Book of Mormon is. Quoting from the introductory page of this book: "The Book of Mormon is a volume of holy scripture comparable to the Bible. It is a record of God's dealings with the ancient inhabitants of the Americas and contains, as does the Bible, the fullness of the everlasting gospel. 

The Book was written by many  ancient prophets by the spirit of prophecy and revelation their words, written on gold plates, were quoted and abridged by a prophet-historian, named Mormon. The record gives an account of two great civilizations. One came from Jerusalem in 600 B.C., and afterwards separated into two nations, known as the Nephites and the Lamanites. The other came much earlier when the Lord confounded the tongues at the Tower of Babel. This group is known as the Jaredites. After thousands of years, all were destroyed except the Lamanites, and they are the principal ancestors of the American Indians. 

The crowning event recorded in the Book of Mormon is the personal ministry of the Lord Jesus Christ among the Nephites soon after his resurrection. It puts forth the doctrines of the gospel, outlines the plan of salvation, and tells men what they must do to gain peace in this life and eternal salvation in the life to come. 

After Mormon completed his writing. he delivered the account to his son Moroni, who added a few words of his own and hid up the plates in the Hill Cumorah. On September 21, 1823, the same Moroni, then a glorified, resurrected being, appeared to the Prophet Joseph Smith and instructed him relative to the ancient record and its destined translation into the English language."

I have a fervent belief in and testimony of The Book of Mormon. I have had many sacred experiences while turning the pages of this wonderful book. The stories are ever relevant and have helped me in my marriage relationships, teaching children and other significant circumstances. 

If I were to suggest a book to inspire your marriage, raise your families or heal your soul; this would be the first that I would point to, followed by the Holy Bible. 

Many years ago I was struggling with how to help one of my children. They were having some deep struggles. I prayed and fasted mightily for him. I wanted to know how to help him. I took my Book of Mormon and headed for the temple grounds. While sitting in my car by the side of the temple I prayed and as I opened up the scriptures; the answer was right there. This has occurred countless times throughout my life when I have had deeply concerning questions. I know that this book of scriptures is true. I have tested it's principles and doctrines; they are sound. This book goes hand in hand with the Old Testament,  New Testament, and other sacred writings.

Here are just a few of the scriptures that I have loved and enjoyed. To me the most overwhelming chapters in The Book of Mormon are found in 3 Nephi. Here the Savior visited the ancient people of this land, following his resurrection. 

                                               

In 3 Nephi 17: 21-23; 

21."And when he had said these words, he wept, and the multitude bare record of it, and he took their little children, one by one and blessed them, and prayed unto the Father for them. 

22. And when he had done this he wept again;

23. And he spake unto the multitude, and said unto them; Behold your little ones. 

24. And as they looked to behold they cast their eyes towards heaven, and they saw the heavens open, and they saw angels descending out of heaven as it were in the midst of fire; and they came down and encircled those little ones about, and they were encircled about with fire; and the angels did minister unto them........ "

Twelve years ago an infant granddaughter, Averi was fighting for her life in the Primary Children's Intensive Care. During those five months of not knowing whether she would live or die; The words from The Book of Mormon gave me great comfort. She is a living miracle through faith, the prayers of many, and priesthood blessings. She is blind but has continued to learn and to grow. We are grateful for her presence in our lives. I pray daily that I might someday witness her total healing through Christ. When the Savior appeared to these people He healed them. 

3 Nephi 17: 7 the Savior said; "Have ye any that are sick among you? Bring them hither. Have ye any that are lame, or blind, or halt, or maimed, or leprous, or that are withered, or that are deaf, or that are afflicted in any manner? Bring them hither and I will heal them, for I have compassion upon you; my bowels are filled with mercy. 

                                     

I look forward to that day when the Savior of the World comes and my sweet Averi and so many others like her, are healed. This compelling book gives me that hope. 

Here are some questions it will answer;

. Is there life after death? (Alma 40)

. What is the purpose of life? (Alma 34)

. Does God know me? (Alma 5:38, 58)

. Does God answer prayers? (Enos 1)

. How can I find peace and joy? (Mosiah 2,4)

. How can my family be happier and more united? (Mosiah 2)

. How can I strengthen my relationship with my spouse? (3Nephi 14)

. How can I avoid the evils that threaten my family? (Alma 39)

From the introduction in the Book of Mormon comes this invitation;

"We invite all men everywhere to read the Book of Mormon, to ponder in their hearts the message it contains, and then to ask God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Christ if the book is true. Those who pursue this course and ask in faith will gain a testimony of its truth and divinity by the power of the Holy Ghost. (see Moroni 10:3-5).

It is my testimony that The Book of Mormon is a true book of scripture for our latter days. Come and see!

"Patience - A Heavenly Virtue"~

Patience is a virtue that leads to Charity. To me this particular attribute of Christ is a difficult one. I find in my own life that to be patient is hard. As a young mother I struggled with being patient with my children. I am often impatient with myself; expecting that I can do more than I realistically can. 

I think I am safe to say that everyone struggles with being patient in various circumstances. I know that my husband is impatient when driving of which sometimes so am I. I am often impatient when having to wait for something or someone. 

Waiting for things for me is always hard. We do live in a fast paced world with  instant messaging, fast food, long lines, difficult traffic and etc.  I get really impatient on the computer some days. I want to know how to do various things and I don't want to wait to learn them. I want everything to come easily with out a struggle. 

I can say that as I have become older and I hope wiser that I am also more patient. I can say for sure that I am more patient with grandchildren than I was with my own children. 

Pres. Dieter F. Uchtdorf in a talk entitled; "Continue In Patience" stated the following: "Patience -the ability to put our desires on hold for a time - is a precious and rare virtue. We want what we want, and we want it now. Therefore, the very idea of patience may seem unpleasant and, at times, bitter.

Nevertheless, without patience, we cannot please God; we cannot become perfect. Indeed, patience is a purifying process that refines understanding, deepens happiness, focuses action, and offers hope for peace".

Pres. Uchtdorf further states; ".......I learned patience was far more than simply waiting for something to happen - patience required actively working toward worthwhile goals and not

getting discouraged when results didn't appear instantly or without effort.

I remember when taking piano that I had a very difficult time being patient with myself. I wanted to play really well; but even with practice it didn't come easily for me. Perhaps, it isn't one of my gifts. However, because I like to play I have determined to play the best I know how too. This takes patience and practice. I don't believe I will ever be a great pianist but I would love to someday just be able to play the hymns fairly well. I continue to struggle with time to put this desire into practice; therefore testing my patience further. 

Pres. Uchtdorf further states: "There is an other concept here: patience is not passive resignation, nor is it failing to act because of our fears. Patience means active waiting and enduring. It means staying with something and doing all that we can -working, hoping, and exercising faith; bearing hardship with fortitude, even when the desires of our hears are delayed. Patience is not simply enduring; it is enduring well!

We need to remember that the Lord's timetable may not be our own time table. 

Another thought by Pres. Uchtdorf in relationship to this is; "Everyone of us is called to wait in our own way. We wait for answers to prayers. We wait for things which at the time may appear so right and so good to us that we can't possible imagine why Heavenly Father would delay the answer". 

My husband and I had a moment when we had to wait for a period of time for him to find a new job. He had worked for a company for 17 years. It had been bought out by another company. In the midst of this change; he was let go. It was devastating to us. He was given a small severance package and we had hopes that he would find a good job quickly. That was not to be. He was out of work for 9 months. We prayed mightily, fasted, attended the temple and did everything that we thought we needed to for us to receive the blessing of a job. It seemed so right and yet this desired for blessing did not come. 

At the end of the 9 months he received three job offers all in one day. There was pressure to make a quick decision. We really wanted to go where the Lord would want us to go. We were in Utah and decided to walk around the Salt Lake Temple grounds. While walking and praying the answer came. It was so very clear that we were to move back to Salt Lake where we would be nearer more of our family and extended family. This particular job was the lowest pay and the highest cost of living. The answer was so profound that we just knew that if we came we would be blessed. We have been greatly blessed by this move. The answer to why we were to be here didn't come into full fruition until about two years later. Now we know exactly why we are here. This particular test took a leap of faith and a great deal of patience. We were so grateful for this answer to our prayers and the lesson we learned through patiently waiting upon the Lord. 

My challenge to us all is to learn to be more patient with ourselves, with others and especially to be patient in learning the path we are to be on. The Lord is aware of each of us. He has a plan for us and if we patiently wait upon him we will know the direction to take.

If the way be full trial; Weary not?

If it's one of sore denial, Weary not!

IF it now be one weeping,

There will come a joyous greeting,

When the Harvest we are reaping--Weary Not!

Do not weary by the way,

Whatever be thy lot;

There awaits a brighter day

One final thought that perhaps the next time you have to wait a long time in a grocery line; stop and observe those around you and see if someone needs to go ahead of you. Maybe you can be pleasant and extra kind to the checker. Next time let a car go ahead of you when leaving a busy parking lot.  Do a kind deed in your impatient moment; you will be so happy you did. This will be one more step towards gaining Patience - A Heavenly Virtue.

On This day 12 years ago minus a day; our daughter Jenni was married for Time and All Eternity to Michael in the Salt Lake Temple. At that time Michael and Jenni had wedding pictures taken on the steps of the temple. 12 years later we are back with the addition of
Benjamin, Emma and Alyssa! A sweet precious moment~

After touring the temple grounds we returned home to celebrate Virginia's 79th Birthday. 

Two more families came to the celebration.

We had such a delightful time with part of our #family during the month of August. We truly enjoyed every precious moment with these families. 

Live In Daily Gratitude~

 Elder Joseph B. Wirthlin gave a stirring message entitled; "Live in Thanksgiving Daily". He stated the following: " Gratitude is a mark of a noble soul and a refined character. We like to be around those who are grateful. They tend to brighten all around them. They make others feel better about themselves. They tend to be more humble, more joyful, and more likable." 

In D&C 59:7; "Thou shalt thank the Lord thy God in all things". We are to have thankful hearts always.

In the on going study and quest for a more charitable nature; I believe that Gratitude is one of the greatest of the divine virtues. 
 Take a moment and think about someone that you know that shows true happiness in the way they live. What are they like? What do they do to be happy? 
All around us we can find those that are unhappy. What are they like? What are they doing to be so unhappy? 
I believe that there is something we can do to be happier. In Elder Wirthlin's message he shared the following story. 

"A long time ago in a faraway village lived a man who everyone did their very best to avoid. He was the type of person who believed that there was only one competent person in the world, and that one person was himself. Consequently, he was never satisfied with anything. His shoes never fit right. His shirt never felt comfortable. When his food wasn’t too cold, it was too salty, and when it wasn't too hot, it was too bland.
If a field wasn’t sowed by himself, it was not sowed well. If he didn't close the door, the door was not closed properly.
In short, he made a career of frowning, lecturing, criticizing, and mumbling about the in competencies of every other person in the rest of the world.

Unfortunately, the man was married, which made matters all the worse. No matter what his wife did, in his eyes it was wrong. No matter what the unfortunate woman cooked, sewed, or cleaned—or even when she milked the cow—it was never satisfactory, and he let her know it.

She tried very hard to be a good wife, but it seemed the harder she tried, the less she pleased him. Finally, one evening she could take no more.“I’ll tell you what we’ll do,” she told him. “Tomorrow I will do your chores and you will do mine.”“But you can’t do my chores,” the man replied. “You don’t know the first thing about sowing, hoeing, and irrigating.”But the woman was adamant. And on top of that, she was filled with a righteous anger that frankly astonished and frightened the man to the point where he didn’t dare disagree.

So the next morning the wife went off to the fields and the man began the domestic chores. After thinking about it, he had actually convinced himself he was looking forward to it. Once and for all, he would demonstrate to his wife how things should be done.

Unfortunately, not everything went according to plan. In fact, nearly everything the man touched turned into disaster. He spilled the milk, let the pig get into the house, lost the cow, burned the dinner, and ultimately set the house on fire, narrowly escaping with his own life."

Elder Wirthlin further stated  the following: "In our story, it was the absence of gratitude that made the man miserable. His inability to appreciate others caused him to be critical of their efforts. Not only did he not empathize with them, he could not allow himself to acknowledge their contributions. The disasters that confronted him surely made him humble, but, more particularly, they made him appreciate and be grateful for his wife. 

Here are some thoughts that I learned from this message. 
First of all open your eyes and look around you at all the beauties of this earth. Look at all the wonderful people that surround you, your family, friends, co-workers, those you meet and see on a daily basis.
 Second, open your hearts. Get rid of the negative feelings and fill your hearts with love, faith and deep gratitude for all that you have.
Third, live in Gratitude daily. Open up your arms to those around you. Serve those around you; your family, friends and others that you mingle with daily.  
Here are some added thoughts from Elder Wirthlin; "When was the last time you unselfishly reached out to help another in need? Every time we cheer another's heart, every time we ease another's burden, every time we lift a weary hand, we show our gratitude to that God to whom we owe all that we have and all that we are.......As we strive to open our eyes, hearts, and arms, our step will become a little lighter, our smile will become a little brighter, and the darkness that sometimes broods over our lives will become a little lighter."
I want to work a little harder on this divine attribute of gratitude. Perhaps, we could all count our blessings each day. One way to do that is to write down 5 things you are grateful for each day. Here are my five for today~

1. I am grateful for this beautiful world we live in. 2. I am grateful for life itself. Just hold a new born baby and recognize the wonderful gift of life from a loving Heavenly Father. 3. I am deeply grateful for my very good loving and kind husband. I am grateful for our Eternal Marriage. I am very thankfull he a caring father to our children.4. I love and am so grateful for my large and growing posterity. 

5. I am thankful for the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Each day as I pray to my Heavenly Father in gratitude for all my blessings; I feel deeply blessed to have a testimony of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I love my Heavenly Father and my Savior, Jesus Christ. I am so grateful for the Scriptures, for the Temple and for the many opportunity to serve others.

Here is a favorite Quote by President Gordon B. Hinckley; "My plea is that we stop seeking out the storms and enjoy more fully the sunlight. I am suggesting that as we go through life, we 'accentuate the positive'. I am asking that we look a little deeper for the good......that we more generously compliment and endorse virtue and effort." (Standing for Something 2000), 101.

Obedience Brings Blessings~ Choose The Right~

On a quest for Charity one vital virtue is Obedience and Submissiveness. Our Savior taught us to obey: "If ye love me, keep my commandments" (John 14:15), and "Come follow me."(Luke18:22). Our present day Prophet, President Thomas S. Monson stated: "Ofttimes the wisdom of God appears as foolishness to men, but the greatest single lesson we can learn in mortality is that, when God speaks and a man obeys, man will always be right. ("The Call of Duty," Ensign, May 1986, 37)

Elder Robert D. Hales taught the following in a conference address entitled: "If Ye Love me, Keep My Commandments. " Using our agency to obey means choosing to "do what is right and letting the consequence follow." He further stated that at times we may use "selective obedience" claiming to love God and honor God while picking and choosing which of his commandments and teachings - and the teaching and counsel of His prophets - we will fully follow." 

He then discussed; "Spiritually mature obedience" the Savior's obedience." It is motivated by true love for Heavenly Father and His son. When we willingly obey, as our Savior did, we cherish the words of our Heavenly Father. (Ensign, May 2014, pg. 35)

As a mother and grandmother I have tried to teach my children to obey the commandments, follow the Prophet, obey and honor parents. I have explained that when you are obedient and follow rules you develop a trust relationship resulting in more freedom with increased choices. Some of my children have listened and can tell you they experienced additional privileges. On the other hand some, at times, chose to be less obedient and experienced the consequences of "time outs" and restriction of activities. Obedience = Trust = More Privileges and Freedom.  

Of course, as children we each experienced this learning process. 

The following childhood story by President Thomas S. Monson is a great example.

One of my best friends during those carefree days in the canyon was Danny Larsen, whose family also owned a cabin at Vivian Park. Each day he and I roamed this boys' paradise, fishing in the stream and the river, collecting rocks and other treasures, hiking, climbing, and simply enjoying each minute of each hour of each day. 

One morning Danny and I decided we wanted to have a campfire that evening with all of our canyon friends. We just needed to clear an area in a nearby field where we could all gather. The June grass that covered the field had become dry and prickly, making the field unsuitable for our purposes. We began to pull at the tall grass, planning to clear a large, circular area. We tugged and yanked with all our might, but all we could get were small handfuls of the stubborn weeds. We knew this task would take the entire day, and already our energy and enthusiasm were waning. 

And then what I thought was the perfect solution came into my eight-year-old mind. I said to Danny, "All we need is to set these weeds on fire. We'll just burn a circle in the weeds!" He readily agreed, and I ran to our cabin to get a few matches. 

Lest any of you think that at the tender age of eight we were permitted to use matches, I want to make a clear that both Danny and I were forbidden to use them without adult supervision. Both of us had been warned repeatedly of the dangers of fire. However, I knew where my family kept the matches, and we needed to clear that field. Without so much as a second thought, I ran to our cabin and gabbed a few matchsticks, making certain no one was watching. I hid them quickly in one of  my pockets. 

Back to Danny I ran, excited that in my pocket I had the solution to our problem. I recall thinking that the fire would burn only as far as we wanted and then would somehow magically extinguish itself. 

I struck the match on a rock and set the parched June grass ablaze. It ignited as though it had been drenched in gasoline. At first Danny and I were thrilled as we watched the weeds disappear, but it soon became apparent that the fire was not about to go out on its own. We panicked as we realized there was nothing we could do to stop it. The menacing flames began to follow the wild grass up the mountainside, endangering the pine trees and everything else in their path. 

Finally we had no option but to run for help. Soon all available men and women at Vivian Park were dashing back and forth with wet burlap bags, beating the flames in an attempt to extinguish them. After several hours the last remaining embers were smothered. The ages-old pine trees had been saved, as had the homes the flames would eventually have reached. 

Danny and I learned several difficult but important lessons that day - not the least of which was the importance of obedience.

Prophets both ancient and modern have taught that strength and faith comes through obedience. Obedience is a virtue the leads us to the pure love of Christ; Charity~
